A 103-page document with details of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal’s negotiation has been leaked to the BBC. The document is from the talks between the European Union (EU) and the US, which took place in Brussels in early February.
According to the BBC the document includes a list of things the EU wants to exclude from the deal. Most news reports about the TTIP leak so far focus on the clauses around the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). While the NHS isn’t mentioned specifically, point no. 13 talks about ‘health services’ in the EU.
The contents of the leaked document represent the EU’s opening stance on the negotiations. As talks progress, the US will try to water down even these.
This leak is significant as negotiations are being carried out in secret. Most of the information available in public has been through leaks like these. Thousands of people across Europe are protesting against TTIP. Among other questionable clauses, the deal will give corporations power to supersede governments.
The document has a lot more than what has been reported so far. It requires thorough analysis. We are yet to finish reading it. Tell us if you find something interesting in the comments below. We can get to the bottom of this together.
